Nontoxic Cleaners

October 26, 2021 Adrianne Oswalt

Cleaning Tips to Support Respiratory Health

Environmental pollutants in the air–including smog, smoke, and dust–settle in our homes requiring some extra cleaning. Here are some tips and recipes to help you take care of your home!

  • Vinegar is a powerhouse for non-toxic cleaning, but don't worry, the smell dissipates within a few hours.

  • Fresh lemon brightens, deodorizes, and smells great.

  • Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to the recipes below to personalize while lifting your mood!

Here are a few simple recipes to get you started:

Window Cleaner

• 1/4 -1/2 teaspoon liquid nontoxic soap

• 3 tablespoons vinegar

• 2 cups water

Put all the ingredients into a spray bottle, shake it up a bit, and use as you would a commercial brand. The soap in this recipe cuts the wax residue from brands you might have used in the past.

All Purpose Cleaner

• 1/2 teaspoon washing soda

• A dab of liquid soap

• 2 cups hot tap water

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake until the washing soda has dissolved. Apply and wipe off with a sponge or rag.

Furniture Polish

• 1/2 teaspoon oil, such as olive oil

• 1/4 cup vinegar or fresh lemon juice

Mix the ingredients in a glass jar. Dab a soft rag into the solution and wipe it onto wood surfaces. Cover the glass jar and store it indefinitely.
